The long one is about coverage. In cold water it covers the whole neck and tucks into the wetsuit collar — the gap where cold gets in — and some divers wear it under the BCD strap so it stops cutting into the skin. Out of the water it is the same shield against sun and wind: a windy deck, a motorbike, a ski lift, a winter run.
