Collection: Sealife Spot

I have always loved polka dots. Yayoi Kusama is the reason — not just the work, but the thing she says underneath it: that we are all specks in the universe. Dots repeating until the pattern is bigger than any single one of them.

Diving is the closest I get to feeling that on purpose. So is travelling, and being outdoors generally, but underwater it is unmistakable. You drop below the surface and the scale simply rearranges itself around you. You are small. Not in a frightening way — in a way that is oddly restful, because for once nothing depends on you being large.

And the creatures I love most down there are the smallest ones. A sea bunny the size of a fingernail. A pygmy seahorse you can only find because your guide is pointing directly at it and you still cannot see it. A nudibranch that looks like it was drawn by someone having a very good day.

This design puts those two things together — the dots and the specks. Every spot is a small thing that matters, arranged so that none of them has to be big to belong.
