Collection: Colorful Abyss

I went through a long stretch of reading about deep sea exploration, and it changed how I felt about the water underneath me on an ordinary dive.

Because the bottom is right there. Not far below where we hang at twenty metres, the light gives out completely and it is simply black — for a distance that is hard to hold in your head. We dive in a thin bright layer at the top of something enormous and unlit.

What I find lovely is the contrast. Just above all that darkness, at depths we can actually reach, everything is colour. Corals, fish, sea slugs, the whole reef showing off in the last of the light. It always struck me as though they come up to party before heading back down to rest.

That is the whole design. The dark underneath, and the bright riotous layer above it — the party you get to swim through, held up by an abyss you will never see the bottom of.
